Retirement

Local & National Changes to Retire & Return Process

In view of the need to maintain/increase critical staffing levels, there have been changes to the UHB NHS Pension Retire & Return process to allow staff to return to work sooner than previously:

Within the UHB the requirement for the employee to have a 14 day break between retiring and returning has been rescinded. Staff now just need to have a 24 hour break.
For any employees who are members of the 1995 Section of the NHS Pension Scheme, the requirement for them to only work 16 hours per week for the month after retirement has been rescinded. Staff can now return to 37.5 hours immediately after their 24 hour break.
For any members of the 1995 Section of the NHS Pension Scheme the abatement rules will not apply to Special Class members.
For members of the 2008 Section of the NHS Pension Scheme or members of the 2015 Scheme, where the partial draw down option has been chosen, there is no longer the need to reduce pensionable pay by 10%.
The Workforce & OD Department will be advising everyone whose Retire & Return application has been processed to advise them of these changes.

Rescinding Retirements
If any member of staff wishes to rescind or postpone their forthcoming retirement, their line manager will need to email both the Payroll and Pensions Departments on the addresses below and include the employee’s name, Staff Number and National Insurance Number:

Payroll.enquiries_Cardiff_and_Vale@wales.nhs.uk

Pension.Department@wales.nhs.uk

If any line manager would want the employee to rescind or postpone their forthcoming retirement, there would need to a proper discussion on this. If the employee agrees, the line manager would need to email both the Payroll and Pension Departments as outlined above
